Skaņu Mežs presents SNACK – a showcase for emerging experimental musicians, held at various alternative cultural venues in Riga.
On November 6 and 7, a showcase of experimental music and sound art will take place across various cultural bars, clubs, and alternative cultural venues in Riga, featuring performances by emerging artists from the Baltic and Nordic countries.
Over the course of two evenings, SNACK will bring together musicians from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, offering attendees an encounter with an untamed sonic landscape ranging from ambient music and electronically modified violin and piano pieces to various electronic music experiments, spanning everything from noise to idiosyncratic dance music.
On November 6 at 17:00 the showcase opening will take place in the “Nārnija” hall at the “BAMS” billiard club on Cēsu Street, continuing at the “Laska” and “1983” bars in the Vagonu Street quarter. The showcase will open with an acoustic performance by the local “Tinto collective,” followed by percussions from Irene Bianco (Denmark) and electronic experiments by “grisha223” (Norway). Elia Lombardini (Finland), as well as Saulė Nori and Natas Kunas from Lithuania, will perform at the “Laska” bar, while the first day of the showcase at the “1983” bar will conclude with sets by Helena Pulkkinen and Viktor Toikkanen from Finland, along with the local noise musician MIU.
On November 7, the program will begin earlier – at 14:00, a performance by Emil Keller Skousen (Denmark) will take place at the “DOM” gallery, marking the opening of his sound installation, which will remain on view for a week after the SNACK showcase, until November 14.
On November 7, SNACK’s concerts will take place at the “BAMS” billiard club, as well as at bars “Aleponija”, “Bolderāja”, and “1983”. On the second day of the showcase, the lineup at “BAMS” will feature Edgy Palates & Mike McCormick (Lithuania/Norway), Katariina Raska and Villems Jahu from Estonia, and the shamanic post-industrial drone duo “Uttunul” from Finland. At “Aleponija”, the piano will be played in highly unconventional ways by Darius Heid (Denmark) in his solo performance “Every Difference is a Difference”, along with sets by kriputapus (Latvia) and the electro-acoustic duo “Atgarsiai” from Lithuania. Meanwhile, in the more intimate setting of the bar “Bolderāja”, sound experiments will be presented by Christoph Götzen (Denmark), Evija Ābrama, and the psychedelic noise duo DeeeVeee (Lithuania/Germany).
The showcases will conclude with multimedia artist and composer Agita Reķe (Latvia), the duo “SISE” (comprising Elīna Silova and Evija Vēbere, Latvia), sound and narrative explorations by the duo “Allosci” (Lithuania), and the dense electronic soundscapes of “Music For Your Plants” (Estonia).
“SNACK” is a showcase event – an independent platform for emerging experimental music and sound artists from the Baltic and Nordic regions – that offers opportunities for international recognition in collaboration with the “NERDS” network of experimental music festivals and organizations and Riga Music Week. Beyond the chance to discover new and original musicians, “SNACK” also provides an opportunity to experience the independent cultural scene of Riga, where these performances will take place.
For over twenty years, the “Skaņu mežs” association has consistently fostered the contemporary, experimental, and interdisciplinary music scene in Latvia by organizing internationally recognized events, long-term collaborations, and platforms for artist development. These activities have encompassed a wide range of initiatives, from festivals to exhibitions and educational events. “Skaņu mežs Snack” is conceived as a long-term, annual showcase event serving as an independent platform for emerging musicians and sound artists from the Baltic and Nordic regions.
The Skaņu Mežs SNACK showcase is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation, the Riga City Council, and the Baltic-Nordic festival network “NERDS,” which is supported by the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture, “Nordic Culture Point.”
The showcase takes place in cooperation with “Riga Music Week.”
